On which platforms should you develop your organization's mobile apps?

A study released this week by Distimo, a market research firm, reported that by mid-2011, Google's Android market will be catching up with Apple's app store in the number of mobile apps available to users.  Currently, Apple leads this race by about 100K apps, but with the pace that the Android developer market is producing apps, it's predicted that Android developers will catch up by mid year.

It brings up the question, if you're considering building an app for your organization, which platform or platforms is right for you?

A good way to peel back the layers of this onion is to simply survey your members and constituents.  If you want to keep it simple, just send an email (formatted for mobile devices as well), and ask the intended users if they use smartphones, which kinds, and what would they like to see on a mobile app.  Keep track of who answered your poll, and add them to a list to create a mobile task force.  Use this task force as your beta testers and ambassadors to generate buzz about the new mobile app.

Once you know what your members and constituents want to see, how they want to see it and on which platforms, you can use this information to serve your members most effectively.
